Debt Reduction

What everybody ought to know about
Consumer Debt Reduction.

Is the creditor treating you fairly?

Is the creditor treating you fairly? Are your rights violated? Does the Federal Trade Commission protect your rights as a consumer?

The role of the Federal Trade Commission is to enforce all of the credit laws needed to protect your rights as a consumer that uses them. Although the FTC does not demand creditors provide credit, it does enforce the right of being given an equal opportunity to get credit and to get help when credit problems arise.

According to the FTC, everyone is entitled to a credit report. Under the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, everyone has the right to retain a copy of their credit report which should have all of the information on file when you request it. Every 12 months, one of the three national consumer reporting bureaus are obligated to give you a free copy. A free credit report must also be given if a company takes legal action against you or denies you credit. The FTC also requires credit report bureaus like Experian to give up information on who requested to see your credit report during the past year.

In addition to credit report access rights, the FTC has introduced the Equal Credit Opportunity Act which lets people of all races, religions, and ages receive a credit card whenever they need it. The ECOA is always on its heels protecting consumers who work with credit companies. In addition to access rights, the ECOA gives consumers the right to know why they have been denied credit. When it comes to checking for the accuracy of credit billing (knowing one misstep could dent your credit report), there is the Fair Credit Billing Act that has established a list of procedures for solving mistakes when it comes to that.

All in all, the Federal Trade Commission protects consumers against discrimination, debt collector harassment, and allows them equal rights to obtain a credit report. In the business between consumer and creditor, a governing body to keep track of fairness, honesty, and integrity within the business is greatly appreciated.
